A grand jury indicted a Middletown father with murder in connection with the death of his seven-week-old son.

On Tuesday, 26-year-old Michael Heil, of Middletown was indicted by an Orange County Grand Jury and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and first and second-degree manslaughter.

The charges were filed in connection with the death of Heil’s seven-week-old son, Zachary. On Aug. 7, Heil allegedly recklessly engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of serious physical injury or death to Zachary which caused the death of the infant, according to the indictment.

“The Grand Jury determined that a father murdered his seven-week-old son,” District Attorney David M. Hoovler stated. “There can be no more innocent a victim than an infant.”

Heil was arrested by the City of Middletown Police Department on Sept. 13 and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.

It is expected that Heil will be arraigned on the indictment in Orange County Court within the next few days.
