A local police K-9 is going to receive a bullet and stab protective vest.

Thanks to a charitable donation from the non-profit organization, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., the Monticello Police Department’s K-9, Deca, will receive the body armor in the next eight to ten weeks.

K-9 Deca is a 3-year-old German Shepard. He is trained in patrol service duties that include area and building searches, evidence recovery, criminal apprehension, handler protection, tracking, crowd control and narcotics detection.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a charity from Massachusetts with a mission to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States.

Since its inception, the charity has provided over 2,200 protective vests, in 50 states, including the Monroe Police Department’s K-9, Simba.

Each vest has a value between $1,795 to $2,234, a five-year warranty, and an average weight of five pounds.
