Today, June 27, 2016 is National Sunglasses Day. Yes, there really is a day for everything. The day is designed to remind people that UV exposure is bad for your eyes.

According to The Vision Council, here are a few reasons for you to wear sunglasses all year long:

  • Sunglasses should be worn throughout the year. Case in point, they are not called “summer glasses,” after all. Wearing sunglasses and UV protective eye wear in the fall and winter months reduces drive time glare and sun blindness, and reduces the UV ray that reflect off of icy and snowy surfaces.

  • Did you know your eyes can be sunburned? It’s true – without protection, your eyes can be sunburned after exposure to harmful UV rays, leading to long-term UV-related eye damage. The simple act of wearing your sunglasses can mitigate serious vision risks for years to come.

  • The most important considerations when purchasing sunglasses are UV protection, fit and comfort. Sunglasses that aren’t comfortable will not be worn, and without UV protection, shades aren’t effective. So research your options, talk with an eye-care professional, and learn more about the lenses and tints that will work best for your lifestyle.
