Four states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana and a neighbor in New England could be next. Huffington Post reports a bill has been proposed in the Vermont state legislature that would end marijuana prohibition for those 21 and older. The law would allow adults to possess up to an ounce and grow up to 9 plants for personal use.

The bill also outlines a tax structure that would see 40% of all marijuana revenue going towards substance abuse services.

A questionable part of the law which may concern surrounding states, is non-Vermont residents would be able to purchase up to 1/4 ounce at dispensaries. What's to stop them from leaving the state and returning to where it's still illegal. This could lead to increased police patrols around state borders.

Vermont isn't the only New England state considering such measures. Rhode Island will be addressing the issue later on this year.
