The man suspected of stabbing a man shopping for groceries at a local ShopRite has officially been charged with murder.

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Tuesday, Andrew Goodenough, 42, of New Windsor was arraigned in Orange County Court on an indictment charging him with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Goodenough silently walked behind the victim, 35-year-old Michael Kohus of Highland Falls, in the produce aisle, sliced his neck with a box-cutter and walked away, officials say.

Police sealed the store with about 250 people inside. Authorities say the suspect attempted to blend in with other shoppers.

Less than an hour after the stabbing, Goodenough was located inside the store by officers and taken into custody.

Police and prosecutors still have not been able to determine a motive for the fatal stabbing or any prior interaction between Goodenough and Kohus.

Bail was sent in the amount of $1 million cash or $2 million bond. Goodenough is scheduled to appear in Court on July 15.

“The apparent randomness of this attack is truly chilling,” said District Attorney Hoovler in a statement. “Our hearts go out to family and friends of the victim, who was simply grocery shopping on a Saturday when he lost his life. Our investigation of this matter continues and I urge anyone with information concerning this incident, or Andrew Goodenough, to contact the Town of New Windsor Police Department.”
