An energy company serving New York, New Jersey and beyond has begun  a petition that would eliminate Daylight Savings Time. American Power and Gas believes Congress should formally drop it to save people money.

Daylight Savings Time began in 1918 under President Woodrow Wilson and was meant to conserve resources during World War I. However, recent studies have concluded that the opposite is actually true.

In 2006, the state of Indiana formally adopted Daylight Savings, and according to research, overall power consumption increased by as much as 1%. In the summer and fall months, power increased up to 4 percent, thought to be a result of increased demand for cooling in the evenings. The added power usage cost customers $9 million and increased pollution.

According to a 2014 Rasmussen poll, only 33% of Americans think Daylight Savings Time is a good idea. This number has been dropping in recent years as the general public tires of the time change. If you'd like to sign the petition, link up at Change.org.

While American Power and Gas serves New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, they are based in Seminole, Florida.
