At least one person from New York is among those killed in Las Vegas.

John Phippen, 56, who was born in New York and later moved to California was one of the at least 59 people killed when a gunman opened fire at a country music festival in Las Vegas Sunday night.

Phippen was dancing with his son when he was hit by a bullet in his lower back, reports the L.A. Times.

“He was my best friend,” Phippen’s son Travis said according to the L.A. Times. “He never did anything wrong to anybody. He was always kind and gentle. He was the biggest teddy bear I knew.”

Travis was also shot, in his arm, but didn’t realize until after he brought his dad to the hospital.

John Phippen moved from New York to California. He was the owner of JP Specialties, a home remodeling company in Santa Clarita. According to the companies’ Facebook page, Phippen was originally from Hempstead, N.Y.

The company posted videos to Facebook from the country music festival less than 24 hours before the horrific shooting.

A GoFundMe page has been setup by a friend of Phippen’s to help his family with expenses.

“If you didn't know John you surely missed out. He had a heart that was larger than life and a personality to match,” Leah Nagyivanyi wrote on the GoFundMe page. “You felt like you knew him for years the first time you met him. He had your back from the moment he met you. This is a man who loved his family and his friends as if they were family.”

According to the GoFundMe page, John has six children and one grandson.
