If you earn minimum wage, your next paycheck should be a little bigger. As of today, the minimum wage in New York was raised and, depending on your job, how much of a raise you get will vary.

Governor Cuomo announced that three increases in the minimum wage in New York are now in effect.  Workers in the fast food industry, tipped positions, and all other industries will each receive a higher wage beginning today.

Here's how it breaks down. For the overall minimum wage, it has gone from $8.75 an hour to $9.00. If you work as a tipped hospitality worker, which includes food service workers, service employees and service employees in resort hotels, the tipped cash wage amounts will increase from their current rates of $4.90, $5.00 and $5.65 to $7.50 per hour. Finally, fast food workers in fast food chains in New York City will see their minimum wage increased to $10.50 and for fast food chain workers in the rest of the State, the minimum wage will be increased to $9.75.

As with any change in your payroll, it's a good idea to double check your next paycheck. Failure for an employer to comply with increased minimum wages can result in fines, charges and civil or even criminal punishment.
