There is video showing police trying to run over a rabid raccoon.

According to the Times Union, a couple of videos have surfaced of the Coeymans Police Department using a few of there police vehicles to try and run over a raccoon at a shopping plaza on Monday.

Coeymans in up near Albany, New York and the graphic videos have sparked outrage and a state investigation as the videos show two police cars trying to strike the raccoon as it attempts to get away. You can see the videos here.

Todd Cramer, the president and CEO of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society told the Times Union that "We are appalled, this was a completely unacceptable, reckless and inhumane way to address the situation. We will partner with police to investigate this matter and ensure that this does not happen again."

Coeymans Police released a statement shortly after the video went viral and said that the animal "was not in an area that was safe to discharge a firearm due to the proximity of pedestrians and residences and one of our officers killed the raccoon as quickly and humanely as possible."

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating the incident. The animal was believed to be rabid and later tested positive for rabies, according to the Albany Times-Union.
