The City of Newburgh Fire Department is hosting a Fire Prevention and Community Safety Open House this weekend. Stop by fire department headquarters located at 22 Grand Street from 11-3pm on Sunday for live fire, police and EMS demonstrations. They will also have refreshments and door prizes.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the leading cause of fires in the home. However, half of all fire fatalities occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m while people are sleeping.

Having working fire alarms in your home reduces the risk of dying in a fire by half. It's important to make sure the batteries are fresh if your smoke alarms aren't hard wired into the home. We change the batteries each time there's a clock change, so we're ready to swap them out when we 'fall back' on November 6th.

The City of Newburgh Fire Department has a long and storied history having been founded all the way back in 1797.
