They may not have the authority to prevent it from happening, but Orange County government has rejected the proposed expansion by the Village of Kiryas Joel.

Hudson Valley News Network reports Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus announced on Wednesday his objections to the approval. State law dictates that officials from the state of NY, Town of Monroe and Village of Kiryas Joel are responsible for the decision making process, leaving Orange County out in the cold. Neuhaus stated he's been attempting to help change state law so that county government would have more of a say in annexations like this.

“This annexation would have an impact on more than just the two involved municipalities. Serious issues of great concern relate to sewer, water, traffic, parks, and many other areas. Our study is being conducted in an unbiased way, thoroughly vetted and fact checked. The findings so far have confirmed what an annexation means in real terms for Orange County.”
