Police interviewing an occupant of a suspicious car in New Paltz led to the arrest an Orange County man not in the car.

New Paltz Police say they observed a male sitting in a parked vehicle. When they approached the car to speak with the occupant they smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car.

Police say they found around 9 ounces of marijuana and several concentrated THC edibles inside the vehicle. The occupant was transported to the New Paltz Police Department where officials learned the drugs in the vehicle belonged to another man.

Officers spoke with Felix Vargas, 20, of Walden who turned himself into police. He was charged with 5th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, 3rd-degree criminal possession of marijuana, and 7th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Vargas was released on his own recognizance to return to the Town of New Paltz Court on May 3.

No charges have been filed against the vehicle occupant at this time.
