The Times Union of Albany reports that more than 230 animals living in unsanitary conditions have been removed from a Westerlo, NY home.

56-year-old Nancy Wright faces an animal cruelty charge after the animals were seized Tuesday.

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says Wright's home had several animals in feces-filled cages stacked on top of each other. Apple says most of the animals were without access to food or water, and that the living conditions were "unbearable due to the awful smell caused by the dogs and pigeons using the home as a toilet.". He said her rural home contained numerous animals in feces-filled cages stacked on top of each other.

Sheriff's deputies and animal care workers removed more than 100 birds, 50 rabbits, 35 dogs, 12 goats and several cats from the home, according to the Times Herald Record.

Some 34 dogs and five cats were taken to the humane society shelter in Menands for evaluation and treatment by veterinary staff. Brad Shear, the shelter's executive director, said that some of the dogs and cats were underweight, had fleas and internal parasites, as well as other consequences of living in poor conditions without enough food and water.

Officials from the Hudson Mohawk Humane Society went to the home for a welfare check and discovered the decrepit conditions.
