Tragic news as a paraglider was killed after an accident in Dutchess County.

On Tuesday around 1:35 p.m., a man encountered turbulence while paragliding near Brace Mountain in Dutchess County. He crashed into the mountain and fell into a heavily wooded area, police say.

Millerton Fire Company Chief Keith Roger tells Hudson Valley Post that when responders arrived, the man appeared to be deceased. CPR was performed, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Wednesday, the New York State Park Police confirmed that the deceased man is 44-year-old Varick Stringham of Claverack.

“It is with sad news that we inform the community that Mr. Stringham was pronounced dead at the scene,” Randy Simons New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation Public Information Officer said in a press release. “The investigation of the accident is ongoing.”

New York State Park Police, Taconic State Park employees, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Northeast Fire Department, New York State Police, Norfolk Connecticut Fire Department, Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police, Lakeville Hose Company, New York State Forest Rangers, Northern Dutchess Paramedics and the Salisbury Connecticut Fire Department assisted in the search and rescue.
