Peeper Footage from Ulster County

Did you hear them this week? The sound that says spring is right around the corner. The peepers made a preview in local area wetlands near my house this week.

Hopefully they can put up with the turn in the weather or our spring evenings could be a bit quiet.

Now in case you are thinking I sit out in the dark and listen for noises in the woods, let me clarify. Ever since I was a kid, my younger sister and I always waited every spring for the peepers. My Grandpa "Pop" got us into it when we were really small. As kids we were fascinated by the noise. We loved the fact that you could hear them but rarely see them.

So now that we are all grown up, my sister and I have a tradition of listening for them and trying to be the first one who hears them where we live.

Fortunately, I live in Ulster County where wetlands and Kills are around every corner. So this week, low and behold I came around the corner and the song was deafening. Peepers were out and happy.

Our new tradition includes sending my sister a short video with sound, because for the last 5 years I have won the peeper hunt. She lives in New Zealand where there are no peepers. They have other cool frogs -- no worries.

So the question on the table is, now that they are out due to warmer temperatures how will they survive the cold winter temperatures that will set back in this weekend?

Well, it turns out these tiny frog are very adaptable. And according to what I read in an article published online by Northern Wetlands the peepers we heard this week may be the over achievers. The video below is from my yard. Does anyone else see the eyes that are glowing in the darkness that I definitely didn't see while I was making this recording. Some poor animal thinking, "another stupid human listening to frogs." Lucky for me, they stayed in the pond.
