It happened in the Town of Newburgh.

According to News 12, a Town of Newburgh police officer was in his police car when it exploded are 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The horrifying accident took place on Gardnertown Road in the Town of Newburgh and as of now has the road closed down for an investigation into the explosion.

News 12 is reporting that an officer was in the police cruiser when the explosion took place and that the officer did suffer burns and was taken to St. Luke Hospital for treatment.

Authorities told News 12 that they think an oxygen tank that was located in the trunk of the police car malfunctioned and exploded.

People that live in the area of the accident told News 12 that they heard and felt an explosion and then saw the officer’s car on fire.
