Police: Drunk Man Follows GPS, Hits Trees, Nearly Drives Off Cliff
A drunk man said he was following his GPS when he drove directly into trees and nearly off a cliff in the Hudson Valley.
On Sunday just before 8 p.m., Washingtonville police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Lewis Court, a dead-end street.
Arriving police found a car that drove straight off the end of the roadway and into several trees. The car narrowly missed from driving straight into the Moodna Creek, police say.
The driver, 31-year-old Preston Hartley of Georgia, said he followed his GPS which led him to drive straight into the trees.
Hartley was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. After he was treated, he was arrested at the hospital for felony driving while intoxicated due to a prior DWI conviction in Georgia.
Hartley was additionally charged with criminal possession of hypodermic needles, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and refusing an alcohol pre-screening test at the scene.
Hartley was arraigned in Washingtonville Court and remanded to Orange County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $15,000 secured bond.
