Police from the Hudson Valley were able to convince a suicidal woman to put a gun down. Officials later learned the woman was hoping to commit, “suicide by cop.”

Around 3:15 a.m. on Thursday, Kingston Police received a report of a shots fired at an apartment on Cedar Street in Kingston.

After entering the apartment, authorities found a 22-year-old female holding a handgun. Officers were able to convince her to put the gun down and take her into custody. The woman, police and others living in the apartment building were not hurt, police say.

After the female was taken into custody, police learned what appeared to a handgun was actually a pellet gun designed to look like a handgun. Officials also discovered that the woman wanted to commit “suicide by cop,” police say.

The unnamed woman was then transported to Health Alliance for an evaluation and treatment.

“A brief review of the incident showed that the officers were faced by a person in emotional crisis and acting in a dangerous manner,” Kingston Chief of Police Egidio F. Tinti said. “If not for the extensive training that our officers regularly attend, the incident could have had a much different result.”
