Police say a man driving over 70 MPH on a Hudson Valley Street crashed into a pole and was later found to be in possession of a loaded gun and drugs.

Wednesday around 1:00 a.m., City of Newburgh police noticed a vehicle traveling over 70 miles per hour on Fullerton Avenue in the City of Newburgh. As officers attempted to start a traffic stop, the car drove into a telephone pole at the intersection of Gidney Avenue.

Police say the suspect then fled on foot. He was taken into custody near 310 Fullerton Avenue. The vehicle was impounded. Allegedly a 9mm pistol loaded with 15 rounds and several bags of PCP was found inside the vehicle.

Tariq McCoy, 35, of Newburgh was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, misdemeanors, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, and operating a vehicle with a suspend license, violations.

According to City of Newburgh Police, McCoy had a suspended license for failing to pay child support and is a two time convicted felon. He was held pending arraignment in City Court.
