Police say a man who locked himself inside a Stewart's bathroom in Ulster County was overdosing on heroin.

The Ellenville Police Department responded to a call about a person who wouldn’t come out of the Stewart’s bathroom on Route 209 in the Village of Ellenville.

After arriving authorities were able gain access into the bathroom and found an unnamed man allegedly intoxicated and disorientated.

Police say a further investigation revealed a used syringe and a clear Ziploc bag on the top of the toilet, which contained a substance that tested positive for heroin.

The Ellenville Rescue Squad was contacted and the man was taken to Ellenville Hospital where he was treated and released for a heroin overdose.

The man was then taken to the Ellenville Police Department where he was charged with 7th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, and 1st-degree loitering.

He is due in court on May 31.
