An Orange County woman is accused of bringing drugs into a local prison.

On Sunday, a police investigation revealed that 39-year-old Brittany Shay of Newburgh brought suboxone into the Fishkill Correctional Facility with the intent to provide it to an inmate, officials say.

Suboxone is used in the treatment of opioid addiction but when abused it can also be highly addictive.

New York State Police from the Wappinger charged Shay with first-degree promoting prison contraband and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both class D felonies.

Shay was arraigned in the Town of East Fishkill Court and released on her own recognizance. She is due to appear in the Town of Fishkill Court on Jan 11.

New York State Police were assisted by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations.
