An upper Hudson Valley man is accused of stealing hunting and fishing gear from a home.

On Tuesday, deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a 911 call about a burglary in progress at a home on Spring Street in the Town of Copake. The building was a vacant residence that was being used by the owner to store property.

Prior to the police arrival, the property owner confronted the suspect, 22-year-old Jason O’Connell Jr., of Copake. O’Connell fled with hunting and fishing gear after an altercation with the homeowner, police say.

The victim was able to get O’Connell’s license plate number and description of the vehicle. O’Connell was found at his home and charged with burglary, a felony, and a misdemeanor for petit larceny.

O’Connell was arraigned in Copake Town Court and was remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail $20,000 bond.

The stolen items were returned, officials say.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Police.
