A man was convicted to six years in prison for admitting he attempted to rob the Chase Bank in the City of Poughkeepsie.

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, William Byrne was convicted of attempted robbery and sentenced as a second felony offender and sentenced to six years in a state prison by Dutchess County Court Judge Stephen Greller.

Byrne admitted that he attempted to rob Chase Bank on Main Street by "handing a note to the teller and threatening that he had a handgun in his pocket," Greller said via news release. He was arrested "immediately after the attempted robbery."

Records on the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website show Byrne has multiple convictions dating back to 1982.

The robbery attempt occurred at the Chase Bank located at 285 Main Street on January 20, 2015. From the Hudson Valley News Network's report at the time of the incident:

Initial reports stated the one and only suspect had fled the bank on foot toward Garden Street. Bank employees stated the suspect passed a note to the tellers but he did not receive any proceeds from the bank.
