As people flock to Adams to prepare for their Thanksgiving feasts, employees of the famed Hudson Valley grocery chain are mourning the loss of their founder.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that Ralph Adams Jr., of Adams Fairacre Farms has passed away. Adams operates their unique combination of grocery stores, farm markets and garden centers in Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Newburgh and Wappingers Falls.

Back in 1919, Ralph Adams Sr. and his wife purchased a farm on Dutchess Turnpike in Poughkeepsie. They made a living selling fresh produce to local residents, and with the help of their four children, including Ralph Adams Jr., turned their farm stand into a thriving local business. Today, Adams Fairacre Farms not only continues to supply the Hudson Valley with fresh, local produce; but also employs hundreds of local residents.

The business' website included a remembrance of Adams' legacy:

Ralph had a heart made of pure gold, although he sometimes chose to disguise it behind a no-nonsense exterior. Always generous and hard working, he would often be seen taking money from his own pocket to make something right or ease the burden of someone less fortunate, if only for a moment. His vast knowledge and drive made him an invaluable resource, a man to be admired and respected, who would never ask anyone to do something he himself wouldn’t do.

No information on memorial services have been announced yet.
