An upstate New York girl reeled in a record breaking fish on a trip to Lake Champlain earlier this summer. LoHud reports the 12 year old Essex County resident, Amelia Whelan caught the largest freshwater drum ever in the state of New York.

According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the catch breaks the previous record by more than three pounds. Whelan's catch came in at just over 29 pounds and was 36 inches long.

Freshwater drum are also sometimes called 'Sheepshead' due to the shape of their head. They can be found in lakes and larger rivers. They are known to put up a pretty good fight when attempting to reel them in.

A few years ago, the DEC started started a website keeping track of record breaking catches. The site chronicles not only the weight and length but where the fish was caught and with what type of lure. Just two years ago and Orange County man caught a 60 pounder in the Hudson River.
