A neighboring state capital has been named the worst in America for a variety of reasons, but how did Albany fare? Personal finance site Wallet Hub has compiled a list of the nations capitals and finds Hartford, Connecticut to be the worst. Albany is pretty mediocre too.

35 different factors among four categories are taken into consideration to achieve rankings.

  • Affordability (Housing costs, cost of living)
  • Economy (Unemployment rate, percentage of residents below poverty line)
  • Education standards (K-12 school quality, percentage of residents with a bachelor degree)
  • Overall quality of life (hours worked per week, commute time)

Hartford ranked 49th in affordable housing and has the highest unemployment rate. Hartford also has the lowest median household income. On the flip side, Austin, Texas was named the best followed by Lincoln, Nebraska.
