The idea fro the memorial was established in wake of the tragic events in Orlando earlier in the year. According to the Governors office the memorial will be created to honor victims of hate, intolerance, violence and also highlight New York’s fight for equal rights in the LBGT community.

"New York has a storied history of being at the forefront of the fight for equal rights and it is essential that we always honor the people who sought to achieve fairness for the LGBT community," Cuomo said, "I invite all experienced New York artists from Buffalo to Montauk to submit their vision and help us create a monument that will serve as an enduring symbol of the sacrifice New Yorkers have played in building a fairer, more just world."

Interested artists have until November 21st to submit their proposals via www.ny.gov/LGBTMemorial. The LGBT Memorial commission will then review the proposals and select finalist to recommend to the Governor who will make the final decision in December. No word on where the proposed memorial will be erected.
