The lack of precipitation has lead one lower Hudson Valley county to declare a severe drought. LoHud reports Rockland County has been experiencing 'moderate' drought conditions in recent months but the situation has deteriorated over the last two weeks.

In it's latest report, the US Drought Monitor has downgraded conditions in Rockland. The monitor is compiled using data from the National Drought Center at the University of Nebraska, US Department of Agriculture and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The area has seen just .2 inches of rain while average is considered around 3 inches.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation issued a drought watch in July. Rockland County removed water restrictions in September but unfortunately conditions have worsened. Officials do not expect a need to restore water restrictions because overall use goes down in the fall and winter.

Rockland faces water challenges moving forward as the population grows and water demand continues to increase.
