Hudson Valley Man Charged After 13 Malnourished Animals Found
A Hudson Valley man is facing a 20-count charge after 13 animals were found severely underweight on his property.
After complaints of an injured piglet in May, an Ulster County SPCA Cruelty Investigator visited a home on Old Kingston Road in New Paltz. Following the visit, 61-year-old David Jones was cited for several areas of concern regarding the care of the goats and pigs on the property, officials say.
After little progress was allegedly made towards improving the care or conditions for the animals, a search warrant was issued.
On Thursday, Jones was charged with 13 counts of failure to provide proper sustenance and seven counts of failure to provide food and drink to an impounded animal, all misdemeanors.
Many of the animals were found to be severely underweight and suffering from mange, officials say.
The Ulster County SPCA, New Paltz Police, Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary and Indraloka Farm Sanctuary helped remove the 13 malnourished animals from the property.
“Cases like this one are difficult. Often overlooked, the suffering these species can experience is just as real and as much a betrayal as anything I’ve seen inflicted on the family cat or dog,” Ulster County SPCA Executive Director Adam Saunders said in a press release.
