Spike Lee remaking his feature film debut She’s Gotta Have It as a Netflix series can go either way, but at least its cast is shaping up well. Not only has Lee tapped a Hamilton star to play his own central role, but so too has DeWanda Wise scored the title role of Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It.

Per Deadline, Shots Fired star Wise will take the lead role of Nola Darling (originally played by Tracy Camilla Johns) in Spike Lee’s 10-episode Netflix series, which re-imagines his 1986 film in a contemporary setting. The new series previously cast Hamilton star Anthony Ramos in the role Lee originally played, Mars Blackmon.

So reads the description:

The series centers on Nola (Wise), a Brooklyn-based artist in her late 20s struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her friends, her job and her three lovers: the cultured model Greer Childs; the protective investment banker Jamie Overstreet; and Da Original B-Boy Sneakerhead Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos), who still wears Jordans but now is a social-media phenomenon. Wise’s Nola Darling is a sexually liberated, free spirited painter/mixed media artist.

And Lee’s statement on the half-hour series’ pickup:
