New York State Police responded to the Bear Mountain Bridge Sunday evening for a report of a suicidal person attempting to jump off the bridge.

Once troopers arrived at the scene, they observed a male subject walking up the suspension cable of the Bear Mountain Bridge. The troopers immediately established a dialogue with the 21-year-old male who was depressed and having thoughts of suicide.

Several times throughout the two-hour conversation, the male subject began hanging from the bridge's suspension cable. However, each time Troopers were able to safely talk him back on the cables. A rapport was eventually established and the subject agreed to come down from the cables.

He was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for a mental health evaluation. The man's family was notified and responded to the hospital.
