In March, Sufjan Stevens will release Carrie & Lowell, his first album in five years, and today (Feb. 16), he’s revealed the LP’s lead single, "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross."

While Stevens’ most recent full-length, 2010’s The Age of Adz, was a departure in his signature style, in a press release, the Michigan-born singer-songwriter said Carrie & Lowell would mark a return to his “folk roots.” In that vein, Stevens’ newest song seems to touch on religious themes and the sounds that have been commonplace throughout his career. Take a listen in the video above.

Select fans can get "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" on lathe-cut vinyl and digital form over at Joyful Noise Recordings, which will be selling 100 copies (the limited run goes on sale at 2PM ET).

Carrie & Lowell will arrive on March 31 via Asthmatic Kitty. Stevens said his upcoming full-length would address “life and death, love and loss and the artist’s struggle to make sense of the beauty and ugliness of love.”

Sufjan Stevens will take his new material on the road during a three-month U.S. tour that kicks off April 10 in Philadelphia. Find a full list of dates here.
