I'm sure many of you ventured out this past weekend to buy your perfect tree. Whether it be that gorgeous Douglas Fur or that exotic Blue Spruce just remember to keep it local.

According to the Governors office Christmas Trees are big business in New York, an $8 million dollar business to be exact. This season and every season the Governor is encouraging New Yorkers to support their local tree farms just as they do. This year three trees from upstate growers, including one from the Hudson Valley, were selected to be on display in the Capital and in New York City.

“I encourage New Yorkers to support this state’s agriculture industry and purchase trees from local farms this holiday season,” Governor Cuomo said. “New York is fourth in the nation for the number of Christmas tree farms and we look forward to further growing the industry this coming holiday season. When New Yorkers buy New York products from New York farms and businesses, everybody wins.”

One of the Hudson Valley's own tree farms was selected this year to be highlighted at a special tree cutting event with the States Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball.  Hurd’s Family Farm in Modena hosted the event at their Ulster County farm alst week. In addition to the kick-off event Hurd's donated a seven-foot Balsam Fir which will be displayed in the State Capitol this holiday season. While in the Ulster County area Commissioner Ball also stopped by Adair Vineyards in New Paltz to support the Wine + Tree promotion. You're going to buy the tree and wine anyway...why not get a free goodie while you're at it. For more information and list of participating businesses click here.
