National Take Your Daughter to Work Day began in 1992 as a day where people where encouraged to take the daughters to their places of employment so that they could see the many vast career choices that were available to them. It was expanded upon in 2003 to include sons, thus Take Your Child to Work Day. This 'day' is always observed on the fourth Thursday of April each year.

Some tips from the Take Your Child To Work Day website to help get the most out of the experience, for child and parent.

  • Think about what your child would like to do or see based on their current interests. What do they want to learn about or would they look forward to doing on that day.
  • Seek out advice from other parents who have done this before, what do they say worked for them and their child. What would they have done differently on that day?
  • Make sure to talk to your employer about the day and to make sure it is authorized. Also, let co-workers know ahead of time, so they can be prepared.
  • Consider inviting a child other than just your own? With many one parent households, it would give that child an expanded view of job opportunities that are available.
