In a move that is sure to ease commutes for drivers, the New York State Thruway Authority has announced they will be not accepting cash at toll booths starting April 23rd for the Tappen Zee Bridge. According to the press release, drivers will instead pay via E-ZPass or by the Tolls by Mail system.

The Tolls by Mail system is able to determine the class of vehicle to assign the correct charge. Cameras will take a picture of your license plate and send a bill to your home or business. More than 35 bridges, tunnels and other roads currenly use the system, including the Henry Hudson and Golden Gate Bridges. Plans are in place to eventually move the entire thruway to a cash-less system.

Crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge westbound is free, but eastbound passenger cars pay $4.75 with E-ZPass. Commuters are charged $3.00 per trip while on the commuter plan but must use a minimum of $60 per month. The new Tappan Zee Bridge is scheduled for completion in 2018.
