So you have procrastinated and it is time to mail your tax returns? The tax filing deadline is April 18, 2017. But wait, it's usually April 15th, right? There are a reasons that you are getting a little bit of extra time to file (or to pay) this year.:

  • April 15, 2017 falls on a weekend, which would make the following Monday (4/17) the day that your taxes are due.
  • Monday April 16, 2017 is Patriots Day in Massachusetts. What does that have to do with why your taxes are being delayed by a day? Massachusetts is one of the main mailing addresses as to where your taxes are supposed to be sent. Since the entire state has 'Patriot's Day' off, you get an extra day to mail in those returns.
  • Monday April 16, 2017 is Emancipation Day in Washington DC, which is a legal holiday in our nations capital, which gives everyone in the US another day to mail in their returns.

Do you think you might need more time and need to file for an extension? Here is a link to the pdf of the form you will need to use. Keep in mind that an extension can get you a few more months to get the taxes completed, but if you owe, you will still need to pay all of the money back to the government.
