If you found yourself tearing up while driving through the Hudson Valley last night, it may not have been that Adele song on the radio. It was more likely tear gas.

Police say that the gas is harmless, but the side effects can be unpleasant.

Time Warner Cable News reports that a tear gas alert was issued for parts of our area after a law enforcement training exercise released large amounts of the noxious chemicals into the area.

According to the Fallsburg Town Supervisor, Steven Vegliante, a training at the Woodburne Correctional Facility caused tear gas to waft through the Woodbourne area. It's not clear if wind conditions were the problem or if too much gas was used in the exercise.

Residents and those driving through the area were warned to keep their windows closed. Tear gas can cause eye irritation along with nose and throat discomfort. Police say that the gas is harmless, but the side effects can be unpleasant.

A Facebook posting from Vegliante says that the training exercise was halted and the Sullivan County Department of Emergency Management was notified after it was discovered that the tear gas had traveled throughout the Woodbourne area.
