It's been a busy few days in Hudson Valley crime. First, money laundering. Now? A massive drug ring.

The defendants are being accused of conspiring to sell over a kilogram of heroin, including sales to undercover officers and informants, as well as sale of MDMA and crack cocaine.

Heroin is a growing problem not just in our community, but across the country. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara emphasized this in the press release about the ten defendants charged with various heroin- and firearms-related crimes in Dutchess County:

“Heroin is a growing problem in New York, making an unfortunate comeback in cities and rural communities alike.  Heroin and prescription pill overdoses keep going up, killing more and more people every day.  With heroin trafficking and firearms charges like those brought today against ten defendants selling drugs in Dutchess County, we aim to confront this epidemic.  We thank the FBI, the Dutchess County Sherriff’s Office and the Poughkeepsie Police Department for their extraordinary efforts on this case.”

Eight of the offenders face a maximum sentence of life in prison, while others are facing 20 years. The entire list of charges and potential sentences can be found here.
