Not only that, but people feel a sense of kinship with the characters that they enjoy. There's a connection people have with their favorite heroes that almost transcends that of other media--people relate to the personality traits, quirks, and various characteristics of, say, Wolverine or Iron Man. A huge part of the success of Spider-Man and the reason why he's become such a beloved figure in popular culture is because of his origins as an awkward, goofy teenager that so many could relate to.

Ranker, which bills itself as "the leading digital media company for crowd sourced rankings and opinions" has put together a list of the most popular superheroes by state, based on over 84,000 votes from 6,000 people.
