Three were arrested for attempting to climb a local bridge early Monday morning. LoHud reports the three men, two New York residents and one from Maryland were spotted just after 1 a.m. and were arrested as they attempted to climb to the top of the Bear Mountain Bridge.

Each man faces trespassing and disorderly conduct charges, both misdemeanors. They will be arraigned in Cortlandt Town Court at a future date. The amateur climbers were each between the ages of 18 and 21 and their names were not released.

According to the New York State Bridge Authority, the Bear Mountain Bridge was the first between New York City and Albany to support vehicular traffic. It was opened in 1924 and at the time was the longest suspension bridge in the world as well as the first with a concrete deck.

The bridge was built in response to the popularity of nearby Bear Mountain State Park which overwhelmed ferryboats who couldn't keep up with the added automobile traffic.
