Since The Verve Pipe came into the WRRV studios and kill a killer acoustic performance of their huge hit song "The Freshman", why not jump back to 1996 with the band to do this weeks throwback?

Few people remember that "The Freshman" was actually the THIRD single off their debut album, Villains. "Cup Of Tea" dropped first and was followed up later that year with "Photograph".

"Cup Of Tea" was not REALLY my *cough* cup of tea, however, it did catch my attention. When "Photograph" rolled onto radio, I love the sound right away.  The almost mournful keyboard at the beginning, when the bass drops in and the drums supporting the vocals. Guitars didn't even show up in the song until the pre-chorus/chorus, and it was loaded with tons of fantastic era-specific distortion.

And the absolutely perfect "Meanwhiiiile" dropped in front of the refrain or whatever. Just full of attitude. The guitar solo towards the end. "Photograph" eventually topped at #6 on the US Alternative charts and #17 on the Mainstream Rock charts.

Honestly, there's very little that isn't damn near perfect on this song. I'm reliving senior year of high school as I'm typing this.
