New York's new window tinting law ensnared one Dutchess County man -- and for much more than the cost of a traffic ticket.

A New York State Trooper was conducting a traffic incident management detail on State Route 55 in Union Vale on Wednesday when he spotted a car with tinted windows driven by Jonathan S. Maeder of Hyde Park.

While interviewing the 43-year-old driver, the officer detected a strong odor of weed coming from the vehicle, police say.

Backup officers were called and an investigation revealed that Maeder allegedly possessed around 1.5 pounds of marijuana, marijuana wax and marijuana gummy candies.

New York State Police arrested charged Maeder with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, both class D felonies. He was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Maeder was arraigned in the Town of Union Vale Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to Union Vale Court on Dec. 12.
