Today Is Free Fishing Day

If you want to do a little fishing but don't want to get a license, today is the day to do it.

In celebration of Veterans Day, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation have made Veterans Day, today (Friday 11/11) a free fishing day.

DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced thru a press release that Friday, November 11, is a designated annual free fishing day in New York State, which means that no license is required to fish in any of the state's 7,500 lakes and ponds or 70,000 miles of rivers and streams. Seggos said that,

In recognition of Veterans Day, a day to honor and thank United States military personnel, past and present, residents and visitors can fish for free and without a license.

The Free Fishing Days program began back in 1991 and was set up to give people who might not fish a chance to try the sport for free, or to introduce people to a new hobby, and to encourage people to support the sport by purchasing a New York State fishing license.

There are now 6 free fishing days a year in New York and according to Governor Cuomo the next 2 dates are going to be February 18 and 19, 2017.
