I have lived here in the Hudson Valley for about 20 years now and we have some really hard town names that at one time or another we have mispronounced.

These towns are even harder for outta towners to say. Towns like:

5. Milan, (My-Lin) located in the northern part of the Dutchess county has about 2,300 residents. According to Wikipedia, Milan has the smallest population in Dutchess County.

4. Wawayanda,(Way-Way-An-DA) located in the western part of the Orange county was established in 1849. According to Wikipedia, it had been first settled after the American Revolution.

3. Accord (ACK-kord), located in Ulster County and according to Wikipedia, it was originally named Port Jackson.

2. Kerhonkson,(Ker-HONK-Son) is a small hamlet which, along with Accord, makes up the Town of Rochester and is located in Ulster County and before the burning of Kingston on October 12, 1777 all the important documents and government officials were moved to Kerhonkson, according to Wikipedia.

1. Poughkeepsie, (Puh-Kip-SEE) located in Dutchess County used to be a major center for whale rendering, and during the 19th century industry flourished through shipping and paper mills. It is also home to the oldest continuously operating entertainment venue in the state, the Bardavon according to Wikipedia.
