It's never too early to start planning your summer vacation. And with many campsites up for reservation already, the time to book is now if you'd like to secure a good spot.

NewYorkUpstate.com takes a look at the ten best campgrounds to get away. We'll take a look at a few we think are worth checking out but for the full list, you can link up here.

  • Watkins Glen State Park - Located in the Finger Lakes section of New York, Watkins Glen was chosen in a USA Today Readers Poll as the 3 best state park in America. More than 15 waterfalls, numerous gorges and plenty of hiking trails are a pretty good reason to pay a visit.
  • Saranac Lake Campgrounds - If you've ever wanted to camp on an island, this could be the right choice for you. With more than 80 island campsites, demand is high as they fill up quickly. Just remember, you're on your own for firewood and toilet paper here, so stock up.
  • Glimmerglass State Park - In close proximity to Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame, this campsite on the tip of Otsego Lake provides swimming and boating to go along with the history lesson you'll receive by check out the Hall.
  • Alger Island - Another island camping option--if you're looking for some peace and quiet--that could be a good fit for you. Alger Island is only available by boat.
