My husband remembers driving on the Thruway, back in the late '70s, and not having any money for the toll. They took down his name and address and sent him a bill in the mail. They didn't add any additional fees or interest, they simply trusted he would do the right thing. While he did mail it in, they aren't that trusting anymore and if you are one of the many New Yorkers who don't pay your tolls, it could have some significant consequences.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that MTA Bridges and Tunnels is set to strengthen toll evasion enforcement at its seven bridges and two tunnels in New York City. There is already a proposed New York State regulation that would suspend the registrations of vehicles that repeatedly evade payment on toll crossings.

The MTA Bridges and Tunnels Committee today approved updating its regulations to incorporate the proposed new state regulation. This means that there would be opportunities for vehicle owners to challenge or transfer toll violations before a $50 fee is levied. The next step would be having their registrations suspended. The full MTA Board is scheduled to consider the revised regulations Wednesday.
