Spring Turkey Hunting Season Begins 5/1

Turkey hunting season will begin this weekend and run the entire month of May. New York State has two turkey hunting seasons, one in the spring and one in the fall. Pretty much the area that you can go hunting for turkeys is Upstate New York, north of Westchester County. Hunting for turkey's is prohibited in Long Island and New York City.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you plan to hunt the turkeys:

• You will need a turkey hunting permit in addition to your hunting license.
• You are limited to two bearded turkeys during the spring hunting season, but are only allowed one turkey per day.
• You can hunt with either a bow or a crossbow or a shotgun or handgun with shot no larger than a No. 2 or smaller than No. 8.
• Once you get a turkey, you will need to fill out one of the tags that comes with your turkey hunting permit and attach it to your turkey immediately. Then you have up to 7 days to report your "catch" to the Department of Environmental Control website, or you can make the report by calling 1-866-426-3778.
