More than three million dollars in improvements are coming to the Walkway Over The Hudson. The Poughkeepsie Journal reports a $2.8 million concession and visitor center will be built on the Highland side. While $725,000 will go towards security and maintenance upgrades.

The new building was just approved in the 2016-17 state budget. It will include space for picnics along with a covered patio and new bathrooms. New park offices and a new path will improve access. A request for bids will reportedly be announced later this year.

The Walkway opened in 2009 and has had millions of visitors. Attendance is on the rise and will surely continue to trend upwards. The Journal reports there was a 5.6% increase from 2014 to 2015. State records indicate 448,719 people visited the Walkway Over The Hudson in '15.

There's still time to register for the 2016 Walkway Over The Hudson Marathon taking place June 11th and 12th.
