Who Knew Whales Ate That Much Fiber
It's been a big few days for marine biologists!
A little while ago, some of them caught a shark giving birth in the Atlantic for the first time and caught it on film.
Today, a story was listed on the Daily Mail about how a bunch of photographers were following a sperm whale off the Island of Dominica in the Caribbean. I'm now going to DIRECTLY quote the title of the story from DailyMail.co.uk.
"Poonado! The moment divers were caught up in a 30-metre wide bowel movement as sperm whale unleashed its rare - and revolting - defence mechanism".
For our metrically challenged friends, a single meter equals 3.28 feet. The cloud of poo was roughly 98 feet wide. NINETY EIGHT. Just to keep it in perspective, however, an adult female sperm whale can weigh up to about 15 tons.
According to the photographer the whale may have used it as a defense mechanism, as the whale defecated, turned onto it's side and started flapping it's tail....swirling up the poo into such a mess that the divers could not see their hands in front of their faces. Apparently, it was EVERYWHERE. In their hair, ears, everything.
I don't have permission to post the photos, but I put the link for the photos in the headline from the paper. I've got to admit, that's an impressive dook.
I'm not sure about you but between sharks giving birth and epic whale dumps, I'm going to stay in a pool this summer.
