As the mud run season winds down, you can always finish it off with the Spartan Beast up in Killington, Vermont. Ya know, if you enjoy that kind of punishment. (To be fair, I'd like to be able to run it ONCE. And then tell the story at parties for years after.) There are a few more mud runs before everything shuts down, but none that carry as much cache as Killington.

HOWEVER, if you don't enjoy that sort of thing or the distance involved in getting to that particular race, there's plenty of stuff around here. The road races are about to pick up and should lead right through the holiday season.

Spartan Race - Killington, Vermont. Sept 17th. That's still room for you at what if pretty much the penultimate Spartan Race of the year for the northeast and east coast. But it'll cost you almost $200 to play in the mud.

Patriot Highlander - Cobleskill, NY. Sept 17th. I've passed this a few times heading upstate and caught a look at a few obstacles. Looks like a fun, not crazy expensive, local mud run.

MHRRC Dutchess County Classic - Lagrangeville, NY. Sept 18th. Nice 5k road race.

Pfalz Point Trail Challenge - New Paltz, NY. Sept 25th. Trail run through Mohonk! Just hope the leaves are turning by that point.

City Challenge Obstacle Race - Hoboken, NJ. Oct 1st. Obstacles without the mud!
